This is one of the biggest days of the year. I say one of.... not THE biggest day of the year. I think we all know what that is. But opening day of the regular NFL season is in the top 10. Exactly where it falls in the top 10 you will find out by the end of this entry. And make no mistake. This IS the definitive list on TOP 10 DAYS OF THE YEAR!!!!!
Starting at number 10 and working our way to number 1 I've had to give this a lot of thought. There are a lot of great days during the year. But many times they are followed by a really BAD day and that diminishes the greatness of the day before. So, I think there are a lot of things that must be considered when putting a list of this magnitude together. Let's just take a look, shall we?
10. Labor Day - This is a great day for several reasons. First, for the parents it signifies the beginning of another school year even if you live in the northeast. No matter where you live in America, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. For kids this sucks. But for most parents, it's a really great day. It is a day off work for most parents too. So that automatically gets it into the top 10. But the biggest reason Labor Day makes it into the top 10 is that Labor Day means only one more month of 100 degree days in Texas until next year!!!! Whooooo!!!!!
9. Opening Day of the NFL Regular Season - obviously, this is a great day because the regular season is finally underway after 4 weeks of meaningless games in which most of the guys anyone would pay to see are only on the field for one quarter. Even while they are on the field we fans are all in a constant state of dizziness from holding our breaths in fear of one of the them getting injured. Plus on the first day of the season, we all still have that little bit of hope that this year, our team can go all the way and win the Super Bowl even if you are a Cowboys fan and Jerry "stinking" Jones is still the owner.
8. Easter - Jesus loves us.
7. New Years Eve - It's fun! Watching the ball drop in Times Square, watching the celebrations all over the world, seeing the people who are normally totally sane act like fools. It's just a lot of fun. The reason that New Years Eve can never be higher than number 7 on the list is that it is immediately followed by New Years Day..... many of us don't feel so well on New Years Day after acting like a fool on New Years Eve. Plus, the day after New Years, the holidays are over for another year, you have to go back to work even if you saved all of your vacation last year for the holidays, it is all over now.
6. 4th of July - This is a great day because it is one of the few days in the summer when almost everybody is off work. You can plan vacations around it. There are parades. No day that has a parade can be a bad day. For kids, they know that they still have almost two more months before school starts back. Plus, it's hotter than hell and in the middle of this day you can state right out loud even in Texas that it can't possibly get any hotter than it is right now! There is no where to go but down!
5. Thanksgiving - I have one word for you..... Pie. Okay, two words... Pie and Stuffing. That's all I'm going to say and I think we all know what I'm talking about.
4. April 21st - What can I say, it's my birthday. Plus it is San Jacinto Day. For you non-Texans, that is the most important day in our state's history. It is the day we defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto. Take a trip down to the San Jacinto monument sometime and learn a little Texas history. But even if you don't care about that. It is my birthday. It is ME day.... and don't you forget it. If you don't like this, get your own damn list. It's my list, so my birthday makes the list.
3. Memorial Day - This is the day that marks the unofficial beginning of summer. How can you not love that. It is time for playing in water sprinklers, family vacations, playing outside all day long with your friends, pool time and best of all no school.
2. Christmas Eve - This one was hard to decide on. It is a pretty great day and it was almost my number 1 day. But I had to take it down just a notch because it is followed by Christmas Day which is a little bit of a let down. I mean 10 minutes into Christmas day all of the gifts are opened, there is just torn paper everywhere that needs to be cleaned up and then you spend the rest of the day cooking. But Christmas Eve that is the magic day. The anticipation is still building, you don't know for sure if you are going to get that gift you have been wanting all year (or at least for the last week). All of the family gets together to go to church sitting together to listen to the story of the first Christmas and singing carols. Back at Mom and Dad's house after church, there is an endless supply of appetizers, dips and chips and the bar is open. It's a great day! It has the anticipation factor plus the let down doesn't occur until 10 minutes into the following day.
1. Opening Day of Baseball Season - This is the perfect day. It is the beginning of spring, early April. The weather in Texas is usually amazing. Both the Rangers and Astros are tied for first place in their divisions (along with all the other teams in the league) and on this one day, the World Series is anybodies to win. This is the day that real Texans dream about an I-45 World Series (or we used to, next year that won't be possible anymore since they will both be in the same division, thanks a lot MLB!!!) There is an entire, Spring, Summer and first half of Fall ahead to listen to the sound of a ball hitting a catchers mitt, to hear the crack of a bat striking the ball. To go to the ball park and pay $25 for a warm beer and and a cold hotdog. That's what it's all about.
I hope you have enjoyed my list of Top Ten Days of the Year. I certainly enjoyed putting it together for you. I know that you all look to me for leadership on these things and I'm just happy to be able to give you that. Perhaps in the coming weeks, I'll be able to share another little list I have been working on..... Top Ten Places that I Have Been!!!! Have a great Wednesday.
